How to write a resume and mistakes to avoid

A resume is a written summary of your qualifications, relevant work experience, and skills. It is your first chance to impress potential employers and highlight why you are the right person for the job.
Depending on the job, employers can receive hundreds of applications for one position. A well-written resume will help you stand out from the crowd and give you a greater chance of securing an interview.
With this in mind, it is essential that your resume is professional, up-to-date, and relevant to the particular job you are applying for.
Tips for writing a great resume
- Keep the format simple and easy to read. Have clear section headings, plenty of white space on the page, and a common font style, such as Arial
- Make sure your contact details are up to date
- Show measurements of success, for example: action completed, time to complete a task, volume of activity completed, increase in sales, customer satisfaction
- Include license and transport options if applicable
- Save your document as a pdf, with a simple descriptive file name, for example Joe-Bloggs_resume.
What to avoid when writing a resume
- Do not include personal information such as date of birth or relationship status
- Avoid unprofessional email addresses. Captain_fabulous@hotmail.com is not going to be as impressive to an employer as you might think it is
- Do not exaggerate or lie about your experience, skills, or qualifications
- Never criticise your last employer, instead focus on your successes and what you achieved
- Do not use jargon, slang, or negative language. No matter what level or type of job you are applying for, always remember your resume is a professional document and appropriate language should always be used
- Do not just list vague duties – talk about the specific results you achieved and the impact you had
- Never write a resume longer than two pages. Remember, employers are receiving hundreds, if not thousands of job applications each month, so try to keep your resume to one page… only go over that if you have something really significant to add
