With many job seekers competing for limited roles, finding a job isn’t always easy. And if you’re a person with disability, come from a disadvantaged background, are a young person or a First Nations Person, job hunting can potentially be even harder due to conscious and unconscious bias in hiring.

Getting a job

Your resume and cover letter are your first impressions to a potential employer. These documents should showcase your skills and strengths and demonstrate why you want the job. When writing your resume and cover letter it’s important to be clear and concise, ensuring all information is presented in a way that’s easy to understand.

Interview preparation and tips
It’s normal to get a case of interview nerves, but it helps to be prepared! If it’s been a while since you’ve gone for a job interview, or you’d like some tips on how to answer interview questions we can help!

Upskilling for roles you want
Some roles may require specialist skills. Upskilling before applying can help you secure the job. There are many ways you can upskill for the job you want including work experience, training courses, mentor programs or studying to gain certification.

Sometimes all you need is a helping hand. Employer advocates speak on your behalf and help pave the way for a smooth introduction to employment. If you have had trouble communicating or connecting with employers previously due to injury, illness or disability, employer advocates can help bridge the gap. Your employer advocate will contact their network of potential employers to find a role that speaks to your skills and aspirations.
Help Employment works closely with employers across a number of industries to help you find a job. As part of our pre-employment process our coaches create your employment profile and advocate to employers for you. Find out about our free employer advocacy service.
Whether you’re returning to work, or looking to land your first job, career counselling is often a great place to start. Getting advice from an objective third party can help you to figure out what kind of job you want, where you want to work and define your goals for the future. Career counselling also provides an opportunity for you to access information about new career pathways you may not have considered, and assess any physical or mental health challenges that might impact your employment journey.

Mental health counselling
Mental health challenges can make keeping a job difficult. If you are experiencing stress or anxiety at work or struggling with feeling overwhelmed, mental health counselling can have a positive impact on your wellbeing. Having someone on your side to offer support and strategies is the first step to proactively managing your mental health.
Help provides additional support services for job seekers to care for their health and wellbeing, while still working towards their employment goals. When you access this service you can:
