Appointment of paul wilson to the darling downs

Toowoomba’s disability advocate and local dad of four, Paul Wilson, has been appointed by leading Disability Employment Services (DES) Provider, Help Employment & Training, to lead their Darling Downs operations supporting both businesses and job seekers in Toowoomba and surrounding areas.

Having two sons with Asperger’s and a 15-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, Mr Wilson knows just what it takes to pave the way and promote equal opportunities for people with disability.

As a division of Help Enterprises, the Queensland based non-profit and social enterprise organisation now in its 50th year of operation, Help Employment & Training has a proven track record in both disability and jobactive employment services across 44 offices in South East Queensland.

Mr Wilson will be heading up Help Employment teams at offices based in Toowoomba, Oakey, Crows Nest and Gatton, and says that ‘he is looking forward to the new challenge with a highly regarded, local and caring disability employment provider who continues to assist over 5,000 job seekers into the workforce each year in South East QLD’.

“It’s all about helping people with disability, injury, health conditions and other barriers gain and sustain life-changing opportunities in the workforce, that we may ordinarily take for granted,” said Mr Wilson.

Following a conversation about his daughter’s future and accessibility to disability employment options in 2012, Mr Wilson established the Business disABILITY Awards of Australia for Toowoomba and Darling Downs. The event was created to recognise, reward and encourage employers to consider inclusive employment practices.

HELP was a major sponsor of last year’s 2018 Awards and after being a sell-out event at Toowoomba’s Premier Function Centre (Armitage Centre). HELP will this year assist with expanding the Business disABILITY Awards to take place in Brisbane for the very first time.

Mr Wilson has been heavily involved in the community since a young age, such as participating on the board for Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers at the age of just 18 years. Some of his more recent achievements and roles include:

  • Current Director of Down syndrome Queensland
  • Former Queensland Director of Down syndrome Australia
  • Board Member of Queensland Government’s SEQ Regional Disability Advisory Council (reporting back to the Minister on issues regarding disability in the community)
  • Toowoomba Regional Citizen of the year (2015) at the TRC Australia Day Awards
